Remote Sensing & GIS Lab. of Geology Department

The department, over the years, has produced geoscientists who are associated with several academic and industrial organizations of national and international repute. The department has been associated with research activities sponsored by the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Govt. of India and University Grants Commission (UGC) in various branches of Geosciences. Considering the expertise and past credibility in the research field, the DST decided to set up an infrastructure in the field of Geoinformatics in the department under its FIST programme in 2001. With this infrastructure, the department is equipped with the capability to undertake various training and project-based activities in the field of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning System (GPS).

The infrastructure of the Remote Sensing and GIS Lab of the department comprises of latest graphic workstations with optic–fibre network connectivity.  The lab is equipped with full-fledged GIS and Remote Sensing Satellite data processing capability with high-end digital image processing software suites of PCI Geometica as well as ArcGIS software products of ESRI with all its extensions, with multi-user capabilities.  The lab is also equipped with AO size plotter (HP Designjet Series) and GPS receivers.

Using these facilities, department have introduced the Special Papers on Remote Sensing and GIS in the Postgraduate Level in 2002, which is the first of its kind in the entire Northeast India.

Since 2004, self financing certificate course on Geoinformatics is being conducted regularly for the professionals, teachers, scholars and students.
